It’s October 13th!

Happy Amazon Prime Day!

Happy #NoBraDay too (Iā€™m not wearing one)!

Happy #OralBDay too!

Iā€™m sure there are a few more of these dumb hashtags we could celebrate, though if youā€™re in the party mood, itā€™s also my birthday, which I share with Paul Simon, Margaret Thatcher, and Sasha Baron Cohen! Very nice!!!

There was a time when I used to think that sharing birthdays with people meant something. Iā€™m not sure that it doesnā€™t in some deep structural way in which people born at one end of a year have an advantage in school over those born at the other end of the year. Iā€™m pretty sure thatā€™s statistically true ā€“ dimly recall Malcolm Gladwell covering it in one of his books. Not that I ever wanted to emulate Margaret Thatcher but Iā€™m a big fan of the other two. I suppose itā€™s why I still have vestigial interest in star signs but, again, Iā€™m sure thereā€™s a reasonable argument for that tooā€¦ No, no, hear me out.

Itā€™s not that I think being a Libra does make me care about balance and justice. I do think, however, that being told that as a Libran I care about balance and justice must, in some psychological sense, made me care about balance and justice. Or maybe everybody cares about balance and justice and Iā€™m engaging in some kind of exceptionalismā€¦.

But I digress.

I admit that in my rush to finish an article Iā€™d left incomplete last night Iā€™d forgotten it was 13th October. I was only reminded when somebody tweeted me a Happy Birthday. I thanked them only for them to come back and admit they didnā€™t remember doing it. I guess they must have subscribed to some bot system, which puts it on a different scale of soberingā€¦ That’s why Iā€™ll be spending my day trying to write another piece for the end of the week, which will involve some research and perhaps a dive into a book or two. Iā€™m still hopeful that the two drawings I made over the weekend might lead to a commission, but weā€™ll have to see.

Why Dunciad.com?

It’s a cool domain name and it was available. Yes, I know. Available. Crazy, isn’t it?

Really?

Yes. It also helps that it’s also my favourite satire written by Alexander Pope, one of the most metrically pure English poets who also knew his way around a crude insult or two. If you’ve not read it, you should give it a try.

So this is satire, right?

Can’t deny it. There will be some. But it’s also an experiment in writing and drawing, giving work away for free in order to see how many people are willing to support a writer doing his thing. It’s the weird stuff that I wouldn’t get published elsewhere in this word of diminishing demands and cookie-cutter tastes.
